Saint Bartholomew's, The Fleet Air Arm Memorial Church

The Royal Navy has enjoyed close connections with the Parish Church of Saint Bartholomew since 1940, when the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton was commissioned as HMS HERON.  From 1940 to 1942, fifteen victims of air accidents were buried in the churchyard before a Naval Cemetery was established in 1942 on the church’s southern boundary.

By 1988, much of the church’s structure had become unsafe, and having been made redundant within the Diocese of Bath and Wells, was bought by the Royal Navy for £1.  After much restoration work, St Bart’s (as it has become affectionately known) was opened as the Fleet Air Arm’s Memorial Church in 1993, and became the home of the Fleet Air Arm’s Roll of Honour.  It is a fitting focal point for those lost in service, both in conflict and accidents.
